How to Promote Affiliate Links for Free

Where do you promote an affiliate link without losing your account or your bankroll? One affiliate with a site of his own went from $200 to $5,000 a month.

His approach took 5 months and an email list. Anyone in a hurry pays for the click, and on Google the click starts at $0.01. Each method has its pros and cons, its allowed niches and its banned ones.

The post below walks through the paid methods, the free ones, and your own site, with what each one brings in.

Table of Contents

The affiliate link is the address that carries your sales tag. It earns in 3 places: paid channels, free channels, and a site of your own. On paid channels you pay per click or per impression, on free channels you spend time, and on your own site the return takes longer.

No channel is good on its own, though. A channel gets good when the offer, the country, and the budget line up with the platform’s rules. The table below compares the 5 methods, with each one’s entry price.

MethodCharges perEntryWhere the link goes

Paid socialclick or impressionvariesprofile and destination
Premium native (Taboola)depositfrom $100recommended article

An offer site is a page that gathers same-topic offers with the link inside the content. The step-by-step for it comes in the own-site section, further down.

On every channel, the SubID is the tag that says where each click came from, and it travels in the link’s subid parameter. Without the tag, you never know which channel paid the bills.

On Google the click starts at $0.01, and on LinkedIn it tops $4.

How to pick the right traffic source

The traffic source is the place the visitor comes from. The choice depends on the offer, the country, the budget, and the platform’s rules. Get one of those wrong and you pay for clicks that never become a lead, the action the network pays for.

The rules knock out more people than the price does. The big networks won’t take casino or adult dating ads, and those niches have networks of their own, like ClickAdilla.

In practice, you can compare clicks with impressions through simple math. With a thousand impressions at $5 and 10 clicks coming out of them, $5 ÷ 10 = $0.50 per click.

In other words, if your ad doubles its clicks, each click costs half as much, without touching a single bid.

CTR is the share of impressions that turns into clicks, and on Bing it’s worth watching. There it sits at 1.2% against Google’s 0.86%, with less competition and an older audience (Traffic Cardinal, 2026).

What each pricing model means

  • CPC charges per click, and it works for testing pages and creatives with predictable math
  • CPM charges per thousand impressions, and it gets cheap when the creative pulls lots of clicks
  • CPV charges per view, and on YouTube a view only counts after 15 seconds watched
  • CPA charges for the finished action, and almost no network takes that risk without charging a premium

Premium native is the most expensive to enter. Taboola asks for a deposit starting at $100, takes only whitehat offers, and runs on sites like MSN and USA Today.

The free channel doesn’t charge money, it charges time. That’s why it’s the path for anyone starting with no bankroll. Organic is the traffic that arrives without paid ads, and it pays that time back with clicks from people who were already looking for the product.

But each platform accepts the link in one spot only, and pasting it in the wrong one takes the account down.

  • In email, the link goes in the middle of the message, and GetResponse runs 14 days free, from €16 a month
  • On a blogging platform, the link sits natively inside the article, at a pace of 3 posts a week
  • On classified boards, the link goes in the listing’s text, which also helps search engines find your site
  • In forums, the link only comes after reputation, in the signature or in the answer that solves the problem
  • On social media, the link lives in the profile, and the content points to it

Email deserves a routine of its own, because the list is the only audience nobody can take from you. The process has 3 steps.

  1. Build the list with a form on your site or social profile
  2. Write the message sequence before the first send
  3. Close every message with the call to action and the button to the offer

In the United States there’s one more rule before the first click: the FTC requires disclosure from anyone posting paid links on social media. In Europe, the Digital Services Act demands the same from the platforms. State your relationship with the offer at the top of the post.

Hiding the disclosure costs the account and the reader’s trust in one shot.

On YouTube, the affiliate link goes in the video description and in the channel’s link list, the one under the name. Inside the video, you invite people to open the description, because almost nobody opens it on their own.

In short-form video the rule changes. The platform takes down profiles that point outward, and a promo code on screen goes in the link’s place.

  • 2 to 3 videos a day per channel, with the first ones posted with no offer at all
  • The code on screen for the whole video, with no link in the short’s description
  • The offer’s ad account comes later, once the channel has an audience

On Telegram, the post’s title shows up in the phone notification, and it’s what decides the click. A Telegram channel has no subscriber cap, and a channel with a well-defined topic holds the reader.

A bot rounds out the channel: it answers the reader and serves the right offer, with no programming on your end.

On sites that get results, the link sits inside the review, right after the math worked out on the page. It also shows up in bonus blocks with a button and in full write-ups of the offer.

The niche’s big sites show the size of this market. Sports Betting Dime gets 1.84 million visits a month, and 259,000 of them come from search, according to Traffic Ultras.

Complete Sports confirms the pattern with 800,000 monthly visits, with organic accounting for 60% of them (Traffic Ultras, 2025).

And the cost of building a site like that is low. A domain runs $15 a year, and a commissioned article starts at $50. Once the operation grows, Ahrefs, the keyword research tool, charges $129 a month.

The sites that grow publish 3 to 5 reviews a week. Start with no paid tools and subscribe later, once the site is already turning a profit.

A single Sports Betting Dime page is worth $8,800 a month in search traffic.

In July 2017, for example, blissbliss’s site was paying $200 a month, with weak search traffic and a dormant email list. By December of the same year, the same site was paying $5,000 a month.

He logged the process month by month, and Traffic Ultras retells the whole account. The numbers for each stage are in the table.

MonthIncome
July 2017$200
August$900
October$1,900
December$5,000
  • July: the starting point, with weak search traffic and 200 email subscribers
  • August: fixed the search basics and the page’s calls to action
  • October: the first brand keyword in the search top 10
  • December: 2,500 subscribers and personalized email

In January, income dipped with the low season, and the email list held the month at around $3,000. His email conversion hit 30% (Traffic Ultras, 2025).

He also logged one mistake along the way. He forgot to pay for hosting, the site vanished from search, and its position dropped from 9th to 20th on a keyword with 110,000 monthly searches.

Pay the hosting on time and keep the billing alert on.

The mistakes repeat on every channel: a link pasted where the platform forbids it, clicks bought for a banned niche, and a channel abandoned halfway. Each one costs the account or the whole body of work.

Pasting the link where the platform forbids it

Short-form video takes down profiles that point outward, and forums kick out anyone who shows up with a link before earning a reputation. Every product has the right platform to enter through.

  • In short-form video, the code on screen replaces the link
  • In forums, the useful answer comes first, then the link in the signature
  • On social media, the link lives in the profile, and the post points to it

Buying clicks for a banned niche

The big networks reject casino and adult content in moderation, and the ad money dies in review. Read the source’s rules before launching the first ad.

  • Every source publishes its banned list, and it changes by country
  • Banned niches have networks of their own, like ClickAdilla
  • An ad rejected over and over flags the whole account

Quitting the channel halfway

A blog that earns publishes 3 times a week, and a video channel calls for 2 to 3 shorts a day. Anyone who stops in month 2 pays for the whole ramp-up again, because the audience goes cold.

  • Consistency is worth more than one big day of volume
  • A site that goes down loses rankings, as in the forgotten-hosting case
  • The email list is the insurance against the low season

Where can you promote affiliate links for free?

On any channel where you’re willing to pay with time: short-form video, articles on content platforms, email, and forums. In search, the person was already looking for the product before the click.

How much does a click cost on a paid source?

On Google the click starts at $0.01, and the auction decides the rest. On LinkedIn the same click tops $4, because the audience is corporate.

Do you have to disclose that a link is an affiliate link?

In the United States the FTC requires it, and its guide shows the accepted format. A hidden label takes down the account and the reader’s trust in one shot.

Does YouTube allow affiliate links?

It does, in the video description and in the channel’s link list, under the name. The channel banner takes no links: only a promo code written into the image goes there. You make the invitation out loud inside the video, because almost nobody opens the description on their own.

How do you promote in short-form video without losing the account?

With a promo code overlaid on screen, and no link at all. The platform takes down profiles that point outward, and the code passes where the link doesn’t.

Does Telegram work for affiliate links?

It does, and the post’s title decides everything: it shows up in the phone notification. A channel with a well-defined topic and steady posting holds the reader all the way to the click.

How long does your own site take to earn?

The first signs arrive between 3 and 6 months. Real profit usually takes 12 to 18 months, according to Traffic Ultras.

Does email still turn clicks into sales?

It does, and in one real case email conversion hit 30%. The list starts small, with a form on your own site.

Can you drop affiliate links in forums?

It depends on each forum’s rules, and some ban links entirely. First you build a reputation by answering, and only then does the link go in the signature.

What is an offer site?

It’s a page that gathers offers on a single topic, with the link inside the text. You can build one in hours with a ready-made site builder, no coding.

The affiliate link earns where the offer, the country, and the budget line up with the source’s rules. Paid channels respond fast, free channels charge time, and your own site takes longer to earn but earns more in the end.

  • Read the source’s rules before the first creative
  • On free channels, put the link only where the platform allows it
  • In short-form video, the code on screen replaces the link
  • On your own site, the link comes after the math, inside the review
  • Disclose the affiliate link wherever the law requires it

The blissbliss case sums up the topic: $200 became $5,000 a month in 5 months of site and email. The other guides in this series show how to choose the offer and how much it costs to start.

How we sourced this post

The numbers come from public offers and case reports in the niche, checked in August 2026. Each offer’s terms come from the networks’ own materials.

Commission, hold, and approval rates change without notice, and the catalog turns over every week. Check the offer in the dashboard before putting money on media.

Our fact-checking process is on the About CPA RAW page, and the other guides in this series follow the same method.
